Port Lincoln, South Australia - The rhythms of nature astound again as Mum proves her consistency. Almost replicating last year's timing down to half an hour, Mum laid her second egg of the season precisely 74 hours after her first, at 5:55 am.
Early risers who observed the event in real-time bore witness to a captivating prelude. At 5:48 am, the osprey began looking around, rising from her nesting position. The distinct two weak PS's (poop shoots) indicated an imminent addition to the nest. By 5:52 am, her wings were raised, her bloomers fully deployed, signifying the onset of the laying process. Visible contractions, a shiver, and a couple of pushes later, the second egg of the season made its appearance at 5:55:31 am. Observers could hardly contain their excitement as they watched the final push and then the triumphant reveal mere seconds later.
For those fortunate enough to witness the event live, it was an exhilarating experience. "What a joy and an amazing thing to see this live! With the perfect view,".
Warm congratulations are in order for everyone involved in caring for this nest and the osprey community as a whole. Special mentions go to Janet, Fran, Bazz, and the entire team at the Friends of Osprey South Australia. Their dedication this season faced many trials â from a late egg and camera issues to the unexpected appearance of a rat on the barge, and even the (potential) introduction of a new dad. Through it all, their efforts have ensured the well-being of the birds.
The community celebrates the start of the 2023 season and looks forward to more exciting moments. For those interested in following the journey, they can tune in to the live coverage on the channel here.
Wishing the osprey family, and all those who watch over them, a successful and vibrant season ahead.
