08:10 |

5R5 fledged yesterday later in the afternoon. Came back to the nest at 5:36 @Annette Craddock |
08:10 |
Diane Smith |
yes agreed about TS @Northernlad & @HappySkierUK but not understanding why those TS comments were directed at me as both events that I mentioned had already been TSd from others π€ |
08:12 |
Northernlad |
some people cant or dont scroll up @Diane Smith |
08:12 |
Annette Craddock |

08:14 |
Diana Payne |
@Diane Smith @Karen Daws Let's hope we can catch at least one of them. I am visiting Carey's on Thursday with a friend - just the garden, as I can't manage the Osprey walk with a bad backπ€₯ |
08:15 |
Diane Smith |
and the ts for 5R5's fledge (from camera pole) yesterday was 19:38 @Annette Craddock |
08:17 |
Diana Payne |
There was a picture on BOPH BlueSky |
08:17 |
Diane Smith |
oh such a pity that you will miss out on an Osprey tour when at Carey's @Diana Payne |
08:19 |
Diana Payne |
@Diane Smith yes thank you, very frustrated - I had to cancel mine, but the Garden is lovely too - I visited last year |
08:23 |
Lynda C-M |
Good morning all. It was such a relief to see 5R5 pop home this morning. Did anyone else notice the curious look on 5R3's face when 5R5 took off. She looked as if to say "where did he go?" π€ |
08:24 |
Diane Smith |
So you already know what the walk involves to the osprey platform. I also had back probs when going but took it very easy but obviously one person's back prob is diff from others @Diana Payne |
08:27 |
Mog |
08:25 5R5 back on the cam pole |
08:28 |

08:29 |
Luck Box |
5R3 |
08:30 |
Hawk Willow |
@Helen Clare it's a different tree so treated as a fledge rather than branching |
08:30 |
Debra Jones |
Well done 5R3!! |
08:31 |
Luck Box |
Lots of happy chirping when she landed π |
08:31 |
Catkins |
Blue 019 intruded at Glaslyn this morning 05.42.25 Poole translocated Osprey. |
08:31 |
Helen Clare |
someones wing at right of screen - must be another perch just off cam |
08:31 |
Hawk Willow |
Looks like 5R5 went to join her, keep seeing his wing appearing |
08:32 |
Diane Smith |
yay! |
08:32 |
B. Selwood |
but that's the perch, isn't that considered part of the nest? and who is the bird flapping behind her? |
08:32 |
Elaine G |
Good morning all |
08:33 |
Elaine G |
Wow, looks like a lot has gone on - fledgings have taken place I see. |
08:33 |
Debra Jones |
Morning @Elaine G |
08:33 |
Helen Clare |
second one in last 5 minutes |
08:33 |
Anne Rolfe |
@B. Selwood it looks like it's part of the nest but it's actually a different tree |
08:33 |
Lynda C-M |
That was unexpected. Well done 5R3 for landing on the branch. Was it 5R5's encouragement that helped?π |
08:33 |
Catkins |
Love how you can tell where an O is by watching all the heads swivel π€£ |
08:33 |
worthyman |
if you only had a ticket to Carey's this morning |
08:33 |
Mog |
Sorry just seen I said well done 5R3 when I meant 5R4, π |
08:33 |
Elaine G |
Please may I ask who fledged first? |
08:33 |
Hawk Willow |
Morning @Elaine G |

08:38 |
Vicky Harrison |
feels like only minutes ago we were waiting to see the eggs laid..that was a beautiful moment..glad they have made it c |
08:38 |
Elaine G |
I take it them all come back when their parents bring fish in? |
08:39 |
Vicky Harrison |
and morning to everyone..had eye op so can only see them 9n telly at the mo ..love watching them practising flying and hearing the wing flaps |
08:39 |
Karen Daws |
5H6 still looks smaller when flapping wings body looks much smaller. |
08:39 |
B2711 |
That's 5R3 on far right perch |
08:40 |
Hawk Willow |
@Elaine G 5R5 fledged first yesterday after helicoptering up to the cam perch a couple of times he took off at 19:38 and after an aborted landing on the pine cones he spent the night away. |
08:40 |
Sylvia Undata |
I am back been online with email catch up |
08:40 |
Mog |
That's really interesting @Catkins I wonder why 019 visited Glaslyn? |
08:41 |
B2711 |
Doesn't that count as a fledge as it's a different tree? |
08:42 |
Northernlad |
nope its a branch @B2711 literally lol |
08:42 |
Elaine G |
Thanks for the fledging update @Hawk Willow - it's wonderful to hear and see these beauties are doing well. CJ7 and 022 should be feeling proud. |
08:42 |
Hawk Willow |
π @B2711 BoPH confirmed it last season as a fledge. |
08:44 |
B2711 |
Thanks @Hawk Willow. Morning @Elaine G nice to see you're back |
08:45 |
Elaine G |
I take it the youngest are still at home on the nest at present? |
08:45 |
Elaine G |
Morning @B2711 |
08:46 |
Karen Daws |
Yes @ Elaine G I was just saying that he looks much smaller still. |
08:49 |
Northernlad |
I thought he was going to go then |
08:51 |
Elaine G |
Yes, I'm back - I admittedly have not been logged on for a while because as fore-mentioned I've been doing glow-worm counting (done for it 10+yrs now). |
08:52 |
Elaine G |
So not been coming home till late. |
08:52 |
Northernlad |
you dirty stop out you @Elaine G lol |
08:52 |
Elaine G |
Steve, my other half comes with with, so I am not on my own. |
08:53 |
B2711 |
Sorry if my last 2 posts seemed odd but there was a large chunk of posts which only appeared after. YT being weird again |
08:53 |
Northernlad |
A few posts are vanishing too @B2711 |
08:54 |
Elaine G |
That's what my late dad used say jokingly @Northernlad |
08:54 |
Sylvia Undata |
Hoping thats all th fledging for today but then its all happened earlier his year! |
08:54 |
Northernlad |
lol @Elaine G |
08:54 |
Elaine G |
Morning @Sylvia Undata |
08:55 |
Sylvia Undata |
First fledge aged 51 days second fledge age 52 days |
08:55 |
Northernlad |
so 5R5 is on the pole cam and 5R3 on the branch |
08:55 |
Sylvia Undata |
Morning @Elaine G |
08:56 |
Northernlad |
mum arrives with a tree |
08:56 |
Hawk Willow |
Think CJ7 just took off from the cam pole, cam wobble not caused by 5R5 on the cam perch....and she's back with a stick |
08:57 |
Karen Daws |
I think CJ is trying to tell them something @ Northernladπ |
08:58 |
B2711 |
5R3 is looking as if she's stuck so it will be interesting to see what happens when there's a fish |
08:58 |
Northernlad |
i agree @Karen Daws |
08:58 |
Elaine G |
Don't blame them, if I was a newly fledged osprey - I'd rather be somewhere else, than stay on a hot nest @Northernlad |
08:58 |
Elaine G |
I imagine they must have been baking. |
09:00 |
Northernlad |
69 F atm in poole with a moderate SE wind 15 mph |
09:00 |
Karen Daws |
Much cooler today at the moment. |
09:01 |
Elaine G |
I was thinking of how hot it must have been yesterday and Friday @Northernlad and @Karen Daws |
09:03 |
Karen Daws |
Yes @ Elaine G unbearably hot and at that point no way to get out of it. |
09:04 |
Hawk Willow |
@Elaine G The two youngest still looked for shade but 5R3 and 5R5 didn't seem bothered at all, the juvenile feathers must provide some good protection. |
09:05 |
Karen Daws |
Good prep for Africa @ Hawk Willow. |
09:06 |
B2711 |
You beat me to it @Karen Daws |
09:07 |
Karen Daws |
π |
09:07 |
Elaine G |
Wonder if the hot weather helped in part and prompted 5R5 and 5R3 to fledge? @Hawk Willow |
09:08 |
Elaine G |
As well as feeling ready. |
09:08 |
Sylvia Undata |
Bet they enjoy having some breeze under their legs! |
09:09 |
B2711 |
I'm off to make some breakfast. bbl |
09:10 |
Karen Daws |
Quite a bit more breeze today, you can see it ruffling their feathers@ Sylvia Undata. |
09:10 |
Elaine G |
Yes I imagine it feels nice to have some breeze up their long-johns @Sylvia Undata |
09:11 |
Elaine G |
Or breeches. |
09:11 |
Karen Daws |
π @ Elaine G |
09:11 |
Valerie |
as that branch is attached to the nest is that a fledge then ? hopefully Poole will confirm |
09:12 |
Northernlad |
the tide is rising atm so fishing will be harder for 022 unless hes de heading one he caught at low tide |
09:12 |
Sylvia Undata |
It was always going to be cooler than the previous two days . Keeping everything crossed its cooler tomorrow afternoon ( 4 hrs monitoring coming up!) |
09:12 |
Michelle Gowland |
@Valerie Apparently The branch is on a different tree so yes a fledge. |
09:13 |
Elaine G |
Morning @Michelle Gowland |
09:14 |
Elaine G |
5R4 has very white underparts doesn't he? |
09:14 |
Valerie |
@Michelle Gowland ok I thought attached to the nest , I am sure @birdsofpooleharbour will update us when they can |
09:14 |
Northernlad |
I still say its a partial fledge @Michelle Gowland @Valerie. When he takes flight and not hop onto a different tree thats branching in my book. |
09:14 |
Valerie |
@Northernlad I have posted as branching so I agree |
09:15 |
Northernlad |
And we will all miss them when they all fledge @Valerie |
09:15 |
Hawk Willow |
I think most people thought it would be branching but BoPH confirmed it as a fledge (different tree) last season, so fledge it is for me. |
09:16 |
Elaine G |
5R4 looks like he's going to take after CJ7, who has always had very bleached white feathers. |
09:16 |
Northernlad |
not for me @Hawk Willow flying is always fledging not branch hopping lol |
09:17 |
Hawk Willow |
Hopefully BoPH will pop in with a comment to clear it up for us @Northernlad |
09:20 |
Dean G |
We don't seem to have a moderator this year |
09:20 |
Northernlad |
@Hawk Willow branching refers to a stage where young birds leave the nest for short periods, exploring nearby branches while still dependent on their parents |
09:20 |
Northernlad |
@Hawk Willow whereas fledging is the act of leaving the nest for good, entering a phase where they are referred to as fledglings. |
09:21 |
Elaine G |
Hope BoPH clear it up the fledging vs branching debate too @Hawk Willow - changing I think heard a kingfisher at 09:17 |
09:21 |
Northernlad |
@Hawk Willow . A bird is considered a fledgling when it takes its first sustained flight away from the nest |
09:24 |
Hawk Willow |
@Elaine G I missed your call id skills in chat |
09:26 |
Elaine G |
Do I rightly remember BoPH saying that there's a pond or lake below this nest? @Hawk Willow - thanks too for the compliment. |
09:27 |
Elaine G |
Or close-by at least. |
09:28 |
Luck Box |
Mum happy to stay in the nest with the 2 youngest chicks. There's a bit more room to move now πΈ |
09:29 |
Elaine G |
CJ7 dosing off at 09:27 - looks like she's ready for and looking forward to a long break. |
09:29 |
Hawk Willow |
@Northernlad A quote from nestwatch 2024 below; |
09:29 |
Elaine G |
Fish coming I wonder. |
09:30 |
Michelle Gowland |
@Elaine G Sorry, Good Morning. I always forget that bit as I am reading all the comments and feel as if I have already spoken..π |
09:30 |
Hawk Willow |
6:16β―AM BoPH Moderator Good morning! Although it doesn't look like it from this angle, those branch perches are actually in a separate tree from the nest, so that is a proper fledge! |
09:31 |
Elaine G |
Did the youngest just fledge? |
09:31 |
Diane Smith |
I also remember that from last year @Hawk Willow |
09:31 |
Hawk Willow |
That was 15th July 2024, 5R2 fledged to the curved branch |
09:32 |
Northernlad |
well we all have our opinion on what a fledge is. I wsa just quoting the defanition of fledge and branch @Hawk Willow Who ever is right is no biggy tbh. |
09:33 |
Hawk Willow |
@Northernlad Couldn't agree more, I feel like we should accept what BoPH decide though otherwise things get rather mesy. |
09:34 |
Hawk Willow |
*messy |
09:34 |
Northernlad |
that was a better landing 5R5. at least you didnt land on mum |
09:36 |
old bri |
Morning all , nice to see 5R5 make a textbook landing ! They learn very quickly donβt they |
09:37 |
Elaine G |
No he didn't, thought the youngest (can't read his ring) went up on to the camera pole, but was hidden behind 5R4 at 09:28 |
09:38 |
Elaine G |
Logging off, happy watching, take care all and bye for now. |
09:42 |
Hawk Willow |
09:40 5R5 gives us a great view of him taking off and flying away |
09:45 |

@Hawk Willow thanks for the TC, a lovely view of 5R5 flying around the area |
09:53 |

10:23 |
Luck Box |
No messing with 5R4, he went up and he went off do do some exploring |
10:24 |

10:24 |
Mog |
10:22 5H4 lands on the cam |
10:25 |
Debra Jones |
Brilliant! What a morning |
10:25 |

10:26 |
Mog |
Thanks for the fledge TS @Hawk Willow We were just about to go out and I thought 'just one more look at chat!!' |
10:27 |
Lynda C-M |
Only 5R6 left to leave the nest. Well done 5R4. Got to go out now. ππ¦
|
10:27 |
Jenny Moore |
so the next question is, will the youngest go before the oldest? π€·πΌ |
10:28 |
Diane Smith |
so we aren't expecting 5R6 to fledge for another few days, right? |
10:28 |
Sylvia Undata |
now 5H4 thats what I call pukka fledge - no messing |

5R4 hatched at 24th May, 23:47 |

Wow, can't believe the growth rate of our chicks. Look at them now. Seems like yesterday they emerged from their eggs. |

10:37 |
Hawk Willow |
@Tiger Mozone quite a bit quicker than 5R5 then, 49 days 10 hrs 33 mins |
10:39 |
Tiger Mozone |
Yes but 5R4 have the advantage of seeing 5R5 fly? |
10:40 |
Hawk Willow |
He got very excited when 5R3 made her move to the angled branch |
10:40 |
Diane Smith |
5R4 and 5R5 both on cam perch now 10:40 |
10:42 |
Diane Smith |
at least I assume that must be 5R3 on the tree branch now? |
10:43 |
essleeelf |
Lucky 5R6 is being fed by mum - heis the only chick in the nest 10:42 |
10:43 |
Northernlad |
om my mobile at the moment in town. any news on fledging? |
10:43 |
Hawk Willow |
@Diane Smith yes 5R3 took off from that branch, flew around for a few minutes then landed in the same place |
10:44 |
Northernlad |
wow well done 5R3 |
10:45 |
Diane Smith |
tks @Hawk Willow it's hard to keep up with phone in one hand and watering can in the other π |
10:46 |
Hawk Willow |
@Diane Smith So much going on this morning, hopefully quieter while the tennis is on later π |
10:46 |
Diane Smith |
10:22 5R4 also fledged in case you missed that @ Northernlad |
10:46 |
Diane Smith |
yes I agree @Hawk Willow |
10:47 |
stewart mcdonnell |
Blink and itβs all happening again |
10:50 |
B2711 |
5R6 is quite happy to stay close by Mum for fish and a sunshade. |
10:51 |
Tiger Mozone |
At least it was quick this year not like last year |
10:52 |
Northernlad |
thanks for the updates. Will do a bit if scrolling back when I'm on my PC at hope |
10:53 |
Jenny Moore |
so far: 12/07/25 19.38.15 5R5 fledged,13/07/25 08.27.19 5R3 branched, and fledged at 10.29.33,13/07/25 10.20.20 5R4 fledged, I think that's right? |
10:56 |
Northernlad |
thanks for that @jenny Moore |
10:56 |
Tiger Mozone |
So the only question that remains is "Is 5H6 really male"? |
10:58 |
Diane Smith |
same dilemma as last year for #4 π @Tiger Mozone |
10:58 |
Valerie |
@Jenny Moore perfect thats what I have |
10:59 |
Diane Smith |
oh you are talking about last year, Mighty Titch! |
11:00 |
Tiger Mozone |
Well one always has this dilemma with a #4. Are they light because they are young or because they are male? |
11:00 |
Hawk Willow |
@Jenny Moore I have the same times, 08:27 was a fledge in my notes though, based on BoPH decision last year |
11:03 |
B2711 |
@Hawk Willow I too remember last year's decision as until then most of us thought those 2 perches were part of the nest tree |
11:04 |
Sylvia Undata |
I do hope we can refer to the juveniles by their ID nos and not nicknames as not everyone on chat this year would know who or why you were using nicknames. |
11:04 |
Dean G |
I've been out. Any fish delivered here? |
11:05 |
Sylvia Undata |
@B2711 thats why if chatters can get to Careys to see the actual nest it becomes clear about perchs attached or not to the nest! |
11:05 |
Hawk Willow |
@B2711 Yes, I suspect it's a bit further than it looks on this angle, I agree with @Northernlad though, no big deal , either way she fledged this morning π |
11:06 |
linda Reimers |
Isnt that a small fish in the nest to the right |
11:06 |
Dean G |
Is it an old one, though? |
11:07 |
linda Reimers |
Probably older dean |
11:08 |
B2711 |
@Sylvia Undata so who/what is bobbi bach? |
11:08 |
linda Reimers |
Chick needs to learn to eat on its own,if it hasnt already |
11:09 |
essleeelf |
10:42 5R6 was very happy to be the only chick left in the nest whilst being fed fish by mum. A queue of one π₯³ |
11:09 |
Cath Delsignore |
omg I went to walk the dog and another has gone!! Thank you so much @jennymoore for all the timings earlier. The chat moves so fast that blink and itβs gone! A bit like the ospreys π€£ |
11:10 |
Sylvia Undata |
That is a welsh name for the chicks on welsh nests - for th youngest chickas I was referring to the third chick at Dyfi fledging yesterday |

Well done 5R4 ππ₯³Congratulations BoPH ππ |
11:16 |
Cath Delsignore |
who is on the branch currently? @11:15? |
11:16 |
B2711 |
@Linda Reimers Dad will be still feeding until all the chicks have left for migration. Then he'll leave himself |
11:16 |
NikiR |
I still call them by the names I gave them, but on here use the numbers. |
11:16 |
Tiger Mozone |
5R5 and the Dyfi chick fledged at almost exactly the same time |
11:16 |
Jenny Moore |
I also captured and cropped a photo of all 4 on the nest this morning, all showing their blue ring numbers, and have added to Nest Watch, for future reference, the class of 2025 π π π π |
11:17 |
Debra Jones |
Ah thanks @Jenny Moore |
11:17 |
Sylvia Undata |
Thanks @Jenny Moore that will be very helpful for future reference . |
11:18 |
Jenny Moore |
@Tiger Mozone I think looking at that photo from this morning, still think 5R6 is a female, always a late developer at all times, time will tell (hopefully) |
11:19 |
Northernlad |
saved all that info @Jenny Moore many thanks for that |
11:19 |
Dean G |
Is this Nestwatch something you need social media to see? |
11:20 |
Tiger Mozone |
@Jenny Moore Yes I think that 5H6 was possibly 28 days when ringed and not well fed so in my view could easily be female |
11:20 |
Tiger Mozone |
@Dean G No you need the link |
11:21 |
Tiger Mozone |
Hard to get the link without social media |
11:21 |
Diane Smith |
well that's me done no more comments... |
11:32 |
Helen Clare |
I went to church and am now confused - 5R3 went early this morning, but has 5R4 gone too now? If so what time? |
11:35 |
Tiger Mozone |
@Helen Clare Indeed he has |
11:35 |
Jenny Moore |
so far: 12/07/25 19.38.15 5R5 fledged,13/07/25 08.27.19 5R3 branched, and fledged at 10.29.33,13/07/25 10.20.20 5R4 fledged |

Sorry 5R6 is not going to be flying for some days yet |
11:43 |

Interesting that mum left the fish behind at 10:48:29 & 5R6 went and laid down, no attempt to self-feed |
11:45 |
Dean G |
@Luck Box That looked like a pancake after an alarm call. |
11:47 |
Luck Box |
It was, but I was referring to earlier at 10:48 π |
11:47 |
Dean G |
OK, Sorry |
11:47 |
linda Reimers |
Yes, still laying low. Might get a sibling landing on 5r6. Watch out |
11:47 |
Luck Box |
Mum was no doubt encouraging 5R6 to self-feed and the hint whistled over his head and out of the nest |
11:48 |
linda Reimers |
When 5r6 is hungry enough it will attempt to self feed |
11:50 |
linda Reimers |
someone flying overhead? They keep looking up |
11:52 |
Helen Clare |
thanks TIger and Jenny. So has 5R4 just sat on that branch all morning? Is 5R3 flying or just perching? |
11:53 |
Tiger Mozone |
It is not 5R4 on the branch it is 5R3. She has been for a proper flight |
11:56 |
Tiger Mozone |
So how many had a bet on three fledges by Sunday? |
11:58 |
Northernlad |
i had 2 5R5 and 5R3 |
12:00 |
Anne Rolfe |
5R4 and 5R5 currently both on Aerial cam |
12:01 |
Northernlad |
Poor old (orshould i say young) 5R6..it must feel lonley for the lad. |
12:02 |
Helen Clare |
@Tiger Mozone sorry - had my numbers the wrong way round. I meant 5R3.... |
12:03 |
Tiger Mozone |
So anyone still want to find Nestwatch |
12:04 |
Dean G |
Yes, I'd like to see this Nestwatch, please |
12:04 |
Tiger Mozone |
Go to "Uk Osprey Information" |
12:05 |
Tiger Mozone |
Then on season summaries go down to Poole and there is a link there |
12:06 |
Dean G |
Season Summaries gives 2024 link |
12:07 |
Tiger Mozone |
Well click that |
12:09 |
Tiger Mozone |
The Nestwatch link has not changed |

thank you tiger mozone, been looking for that for ages |

12:27 |
joe sander |
just of interest, why don't we have a link to nest watch on this utube page ? was last season |
12:29 |
Tiger Mozone |
Not a question I know the answer to. It was highly popular last year |
12:29 |
Tiger Mozone |
Lesson is to save links when you can |
12:31 |
joe sander |
yes indeed @tiger mozone, but thank you , very useful information |
12:34 |
B2711 |
I second that @Tiger Mozone I removed it from my homepage last October and it was pure luck I managed to get it back this year. Don't even know now how I did but not your way, which is quite simple. |
12:36 |
Tiger Mozone |
Two weeks ago the RSPB scrubbed 16 years of osprey posts |
12:36 |
Sylvia Undata |
Nestwatch wasnt being done this year unlike last year due to circumstances beyond BoPH control . We hope to have it back up & running next year. |
12:36 |
linda Reimers |
here we go |
12:36 |
Hawk Willow |
@B2711 Maybe google docs? I think that's how I found it once when I lost the link. |
12:36 |
Sylvia Undata |
Thats why chat has been captured by Bart for us |
12:38 |
Tiger Mozone |
@Hawk Willow You cannot find Google docs on Google |

ππππ@Tiger Mozone . Thank you so much. Finally found the Nestwatch document. Lost the link at the end of last year. ππ» |
12:40 |
B2711 |
@Hawk Willow I think I googled Jenny Moore and a X link came up with Jenny's name followed by the Nest Watch link. But I'm not totally sure 'cos I'd tried loads of ways |
12:41 |
Hawk Willow |
@B2711 Ah yes, I do remember Jenny trying to come up with other ways to share the link before BoPH added it to the info below the stream. |
12:42 |

12:45 |

I do feel a little bad to keep referencing Nestwatch 2024 as I know a fair number of people in chat don't have access it but it is such a great source of information, difficult to ignore! |
12:46 |
Dean G |
@Karen Daws 5R5 returned after his night out. 5R3 & 5R4 both fledged. 5R6 started self-feeding. |
12:47 |
Tiger Mozone |
I have just had a thought. If people know what "The Wayback Machine" is it could possibly be used too |
12:47 |
B2711 |
My difficulty @Hawk Willow is facebook refuses to let me join!!! Don't know why as I've never been on it. |
12:52 |
Janet Fullerlove |
Oh! Haven't had a chance to come and look the last couple of days - when did this mass fledge happen? Only 5R6 on the nest here! Can someone please do me a quick update? |
12:53 |
Hawk Willow |
@B2711 That's a shame, I rarely sign in to fb but there is a private group on there that shows some lovely pics and videos of our family here. |
12:56 |
Hawk Willow |
@B2711 Have you tried joining with an alternate email address? In case the other had been used somehow. |
12:57 |
Hawk Willow |
Mind you if that was the case, you should be able to reset the password π€ |

Oh @Sylvia Undata thank you so much! Wonderful. Wow. So many in such a short space of time! And thanks @Jenny Moore too |
13:04 |
Tiger Mozone |
Three natural fledges in about 15 hours. That must be close to a record |
13:05 |
Northernlad |
records are there to be broken @Tiger Mozone |
13:05 |
Tiger Mozone |
In 2015 Dyfi had three in one morning but two of them were due to disturbance |
13:06 |
Jenny Moore |
Thanks for the Uk Osprey information link idea @Tiger Mozone yes I put the link out everywhere last year, and kept original link for those that has it, and copied all details to another link |
13:07 |
Jenny Moore |
There is also a link in there for Poole Harbour Legend which has details of previous seasons too |
13:07 |
Janet Fullerlove |
@Tiger Mozone I bet that must be - amazing. Three so close together. Testament to parents too, that all so ready at the same time. |

Evening all. Question for Poole locals. Thinking ahead for this time next year. Any suggestions for accommodation?. As will need to book. |
17:53 |

Depends what you want? Travel Lodge Holes Bay or close by Premier Inn or Rockley Park Caravan Park or do you want a more expensive Hotel? |

or do you want a cottage ? |
18:03 |
Karen Daws |
I do like a nice cottage. |
18:07 |

@ Karen Daws we stayed in a nice Air BnB when we came down to Careys at the end of June. It was a wooden Lodge in Afflington near Corfe Castle. handy for Arne and Careys |

5R5 knows how to fly down - not sure if 5R4 has worked it out.... |
18:59 |
B2711 |
I think CJ7 is encouraging 5R4 but he's a bit unsure |
19:00 |
Helen Clare |
is that mum up on the pole? |
19:00 |
B2711 |
Come on Lad, take the leap of faith |
19:00 |
Helen Clare |
in which case who's gone off flying? |
19:01 |

I think 5R5 ought to be renamed the gannet π€·ββ |
19:10 |
Luck Box |
@fade2gray UK The flying squadron are all going to need more fish to fuel their journeys, dad will still need to be busy π |
19:12 |
fade2gray UK |
@Luck Box yeah, but 5R5 nicked that fish from CJ while she was trying to feed 6 |

Incoming! |

Yay. 5r4 has made it back |

Well at least can rest easy tonight has all the fleglings know where the nest is so no worring on our part. |
19:16 |
Luck Box |
@fade2gray UK He's the dominant chick in the nest atm, somehow 5R3 has been moved to one side. Pecking order in nests is a real thing π |
19:16 |
Barbara Campbell |
So lovely to see them all together in the nest |
19:18 |
B2711 |
Right kids, no more flying tonight. Supper and an early bed after a very exciting day |
19:19 |
Northernlad |
lol @B2711 totaly agree lol |

@fade2gray UK Isn't it great to see 5R6 warding off 5R4 & then even mum from stealing his food? |

19.31 Beautiful sight and O22 doing the feeding. |
19:35 |
Jenny Moore |
how strange, initially 022 appeared to be eating the fish in front of all the family, without feeding them |
19:35 |
Christopher Dean |
It sounds like CJ7 is putting a Fish Order in. |
19:36 |
Dean G |
@Jenny Moore I don't think they need feeding; they're all self-feeders now. Is he just eating it/ |
19:36 |
Roslyn Coward |
What a lovely family! |
19:37 |
Jenny Moore |
yes i know they're self feeders now @Dean G but 022 wouldn't normally eat on the nest in front of them |
19:39 |
Christopher Dean |
O22 is Eating and they are waiting on the off chance he feeds or drops some. |
19:40 |
Christopher Dean |
Seems CJ7 is not impressed about whats going on. |
19:40 |
B2711 |
Well 022 put his foot down and started to feed the chicks. |
19:41 |
Christopher Dean |
Yes Mr Soft touch loves to feed and he is doing just that. |
19:44 |
B2711 |
5R4 looks absolutely shattered after his adventures |
19:45 |
Mog |
I'm just glad 5R4 and 5R6 are being fed, they needed the hydration |
19:47 |
Helen Clare |
mum should go and get a fish and leave dad in charge for a bit |
19:51 |
Christopher Dean |
@Helen Clare True even she gets a wing stretch, I do notice the Juveniles are very warry of O22 not one has tried to take it from him. |
19:52 |
fade2gray UK |
Why is CJ7 fish calling, she would normally take the fish and do the feeding and have some herself. |
19:55 |
Christopher Dean |
@fade2gray UK Maybe that`s why she chatting a lot, she is not best pleased about something, sounds like O22 is getting lots of Ear ache. |
20:02 |
fade2gray UK |
Thank you, @Christopher Dean, That is the noisiest I have ever heard them be. |

I suppose once they have fledged properly CJ7 will leave and 022 will take over feeding - so he's just getting in the groove |

@Peter Jeffery You prompted me to find this out .... |
10:24 |
essleeelf |
birds have specialized flexor tendons in their legs that, when a bird squats, automatically tighten and lock their toes around a perch. |
10:24 |
essleeelf |
which allows them to grip a branch without conscious effort, even while sleeping |
10:25 |

Nice to see you 022 |
11:49 |
linda Reimers |
Mom leaving soon? |
11:51 |
Hawk Willow |
Do you mean migrating? @linda Reimers |
11:51 |
linda Reimers |
Yes, Hawk, I thought dad takes over |
11:53 |
Hawk Willow |
CJ7 is likely to stay until early September, she was last seen on 2nd Sep last year. She helps to feed the juveniles until they migrate. |
11:55 |
linda Reimers |
ok. I think we are gonna get fall/coolness starting early september in the us states where i'm at |
11:56 |
Hawk Willow |
The juveniles can't catch fish for themselves so they return to the nest for food, 022 and CJ7 both bring in fish for them. At some point they will start to grab the fish and fly off with them. |
11:56 |
linda Reimers |
I wasnt sure if he helped them eat and took over soon |
11:58 |
Hawk Willow |
We will see less and less of the adults feeding the juveniles, they are becoming independent and will feed themselves. |
12:02 |
linda Reimers |
TY,Hawk |
12:03 |
Hawk Willow |
Hope that makes sense @linda Reimers in essence, adults bring the fish to the nest, juveniles take the fish and feed themselves on and off the nest. |
12:05 |
linda Reimers |
Yes, its group efforts/collaboration |
12:05 |
Tiger Mozone |
Parents vary in when they decide to migrate. Some females go quite early while others stay late. One interesting case was EJ in 2004. She left the nest on 31 July before the third chick had fledged |
12:06 |
Tiger Mozone |
Females often go on holiday before they migrate proper |
12:25 |
linda Reimers |
Yup, Ty Tiger. Just have to wait and see |
12:29 |
Tiger Mozone |
Also this idea that the male always stays until the juvenile have migrated. is not true. I have seen males decide that enough is enough and leave. |
12:30 |
linda Reimers |
Me too,TigerM |
12:30 |
Tiger Mozone |
Which nest do you follow? |
12:31 |
linda Reimers |
I watch a few, currently I'm on ,mostly Dunrovin ranch |
12:32 |
linda Reimers |
I've watched this nest 2 years |
12:33 |
Tiger Mozone |
I have not watched Dunrovin this year. However some years ago they had particularly violent chicks |
12:34 |
linda Reimers |
There's one aggressive chick that started up recently #3, but has been good the past 2 days. #4 was barely getting food, but now is ok |

I think they're all hungry, but all so polite, don't steal each others' food. |
15:36 |
B2711 |
Just rewound. CJ7 never does anything by halves. What a star |
15:40 |
B2711 |
5R4 looks as though he's not sure how to do it |
16:07 |
Jenny Moore |
5R5 you are going to get nothing from your sibling, move around to CJ7 |
16:13 |
Lynda C-M |
@Sylvia Undata Sorry, but on rewind 022 returned to nest with fish at 14.56 not 15.46. You said you were having a problem with seeing your phone. Just mentioned it for the record. |
16:15 |
Lynda C-M |
Now I'm doing it....14.46 not 14.56. |
16:23 |
Catkins |
1621! Shadow cast over nest. CJ7 and chicks all look up. Wonder what/who that was |
16:24 |
Diana Payne |
There was something flying round visible on aerial cam |
16:28 |
Catkins |
Thanks @Diana Payne, I took a look. Couldnβt see well enough to say though. |
16:32 |
Diana Payne |
No - it was quite large but far away. They weren't very bothered - perhaps 022? |
16:32 |
aeb4kats |
Good afternoon π Looks like they've all eaten well today, anyone have a fish count? |
16:33 |
Catkins |
That what I wondered @Diana Payne. No stressing from any of them was there? |
16:34 |
Catkins |
CJ7 is so delicate with her feeding. No huge pieces, just bite size π₯° |
16:36 |
aeb4kats |
Was great to scroll back and see 5R6 being assertive about the fish this morning. Taking steps everyday |
17:00 |
B2711 |
Gosh. I've been gone well over an hour and they are still eating. I love the little squeals when they get a piece of fish |
17:08 |
Diana Payne |
That stick that CJ7 crashed in with earlier is causing annoyance! |
17:18 |
B2711 |
I think she should take a builder's course over winter. |
17:21 |
Diana Payne |
@B2711 Well one of her offspring was not amused - and she got pecked crossly π |
17:26 |
Ian Clark |
Getting pretty windy round Careys - and forecast for even stronger gusts tomorrow. Might slow down the flying practice |
17:27 |
Diana Payne |
@Ian Clark That's just what I was going to say! Fasten seat belts |
17:27 |
Beth Mauk |
All together again chilling. Just to precious! |
17:29 |

17:32 |

17:32 |
Top Cat |

17:39 |
Sylvia Undata |
thank you @Lynda C-M that time is correct it was the start time of 022 arriving nr the nest ( everyone in& on the nest saw him) it was to clarify how long they had to wait for the deadhead fish |
17:40 |
Sylvia Undata |
in fact it was so long CJ7 left to get a fish herself! |
17:41 |
Sylvia Undata |
The typo was due to eyesight problems on the phone so grateful you orrected it! |

18:57 |
Mog |
I'm not @Helen Clare Still got my fingers crossed π€ |
19:04 |
Helen Clare |
and presumably the vanishing of the one we know returned suggests that it's easy for ospreys to fly under the radar |
19:25 |
B2711 |
@Helen Clare perhaps 5H3 is exploring the South Coast like 374 did, but he eventually came 'home' to settle down, so 5H3 may do next year or the year after too. |
19:28 |
B2711 |
I'm amazed any of these chicks can take off with all they've eaten today |
19:30 |
Elizabeth Carpagnano |
was that the first to fly or have they been returning. I've not watched for a few days |

5R6 has been doing crop drops laying down, making room for more! |

aeb4kats |
Seemed to be flying fairly fast, maybe wood pigeons? very hard to tell |
21:01 |
Tiger Mozone |
Evening all |
21:02 |
Tiger Mozone |
With regard to the 2023 brood. We have one returned which is a 33% return rate and that is above average |
21:04 |
Tiger Mozone |
We are running out of time to see the other two but there is still 2 weeks left or so |
21:05 |
Abbie M |
what is the average return rate for youngsters? |
21:05 |
Tiger Mozone |
Best set out the parameters in advance and then you can judge for yourself |
21:06 |
Tiger Mozone |
@Abbie M In my view it is about 20% |
21:07 |
Abbie M |
thanks Tiger |
21:07 |
aeb4kats |
Which nest was it that all 3 returned this year? |
21:07 |
Tiger Mozone |
However it is hard to get an exact figure due to many variable |
21:09 |
Tiger Mozone |
@aeb4kats There were 3 out of 3 returned to Tweed Valley, Glaslyn and the third one has slipped my mind |
21:09 |
Tiger Mozone |
Up until this year it was unknown for 3 out of 3 to return |
21:10 |
aeb4kats |
Wow, 3 nests! that's remarkable! |
21:11 |
aeb4kats |
Encouraging statistic, hope it's being repeated at nests we don't know about it. |
21:11 |
Tiger Mozone |
On the other hand EJ was the female at Loch Garten for 16 years and only one of her offspring was ever proved to return |
21:12 |
aeb4kats |
Oh my! that's got to be rare |
21:12 |
Tiger Mozone |
It is best not to have hopes. Just observe what happens |
21:12 |
aeb4kats |
Were they all ringed? |
21:13 |
aeb4kats |
022 with fish, 5R5 gets it |
21:14 |
Tiger Mozone |
In 1993 the female at Loch Garten got caught in fishing line and flew away never to be seen again. The male Ollie brought up the two chicks by himself |
21:14 |
B2711 |
I'm going to stay positive. 5H3 always had to be the first in his year, and sometimes they don't come back until they're 3 yes. Plus like you said |
21:15 |
Tiger Mozone |
One of those chicks is the great great grandfather of CJ7 |
21:15 |
B2711 |
....there is still some time left this year |
21:16 |
aeb4kats |
@Tiger that's amazing. Not too common with ospreys I don't think. I know of several eagle nests with one adult that were successful |
21:17 |
aeb4kats |
Oh I love knowing their lineage |
21:18 |
Tiger Mozone |
There is a family tree which shows how CJ7 fits in |
21:18 |
aeb4kats |
Where can I find that, |
21:19 |
Tiger Mozone |
If you look at British ospreys there are about five super breeders |
21:19 |
aeb4kats |
Thanks Tiger |
21:19 |
Tiger Mozone |
@aeb4kats Are you on social media? |
21:20 |

5R4 snuck in and took the fish from 5R5 |
21:25 |
Tiger Mozone |
ochre 11 was translocated to Rutland in 1998. When he came back he headed west Wales and found a young female now called Mrs G |
21:26 |
Tiger Mozone |
He pitched tent in Glaslyn and a very successful nest was founded |
21:27 |
aeb4kats |
Awesome, how long was he with Mrs. G? I really miss her |
21:29 |
Tiger Mozone |
He was with Mrs G for ten years. He failed to return in 2015 and after a few false starts Aran turned up |
21:31 |
Tiger Mozone |
Mrs G failed to return in 2023 |
21:31 |

Ten years is a great run |
21:32 |
aeb4kats |
Yes that was tough, a wonderful matriarch |
21:32 |
Tiger Mozone |
Mrs G was there for about 18 years |
21:32 |

21:33 |

21:34 |
aeb4kats |
Oh, interesting! |
21:35 |
aeb4kats |
Iris has been breeding at Hellgate for over 25 yrs |
21:35 |
linda Reimers |
There must be an age when they stop producing chicks, dont know it. do you know the oldest that is still a mom?@TigerMozone |
21:36 |
B2711 |
@Tiger Mozone do you know if the Scottish osprey who landed in Barbados is still there? I read an article about a week ago that a walking group there are setting up an osprey conservation area. |
21:36 |
aeb4kats |
Iris is almost 30 and raised 2 chicks last year |
21:37 |
linda Reimers |
I wrote the question same time as you 4 kats. could be iris |
21:38 |
aeb4kats |
I believe she is the oldest known breeding female. Of course we can't know every bird out there |
21:39 |
Tiger Mozone |
@B2711 I have not heard anything about the Barbados osprey this year |
21:39 |
linda Reimers |
@B2711 I read an article, anosprey from barnegat nj was found dehydrated and in st. thomas or near there |
21:40 |
linda Reimers |
I guess some are migrating there. conservation area sounds good |
21:41 |
aeb4kats |
A male osprey lived to be at least 25 years and 2 months old. This individual was ringed in Virginia in 1973 and found dead in 1998 |
21:42 |
Tiger Mozone |
One of my favourite ospreys was Belle. She (actually he) flew from Martha's Vineyard to South America in seven days |
21:42 |

@Linda Reimers this Scottish one got blown off course on her maiden flight. First to S.Ireland, then across the Atlantic to Barbados. Believed to be a first for UK |
21:44 |

I have just realised that it is my osprey group 21st birthday tomorrow |
21:55 |
aeb4kats |
They've come of age! π |
21:55 |
Tiger Mozone |
There was not a lot around in 2004 |
21:56 |
B2711 |
Bet you wish it was yours @Tiger Mozone. lol |
21:56 |
aeb4kats |
I'm sure! What's it called Tiger? I have Imagicat |
21:56 |

I wonder what the first osprey banded Number or name was? |
21:59 |
Tiger Mozone |
The first ospreys to be banded in Britain was 1967 |
22:00 |
aeb4kats |
I see a FB group with you and Chloe as admins |
22:00 |

Those birds from those years must be gone now |
22:01 |
Northernlad |
A murder of crows |
22:01 |
B2711 |
22.00 that doesn't sound good. Hope CJ7 's ok |
22:04 |
aeb4kats |
Sounded like a raven |
22:05 |
B2711 |
Thank goodness she's back |
22:07 |
aeb4kats |
She took out after it, no doubt evicted it from the nest area |
22:07 |
Tiger Mozone |
@linda Reimers I think they were death within months |
22:08 |
B2711 |
Look at 5R3 and then CJ7. Apart from the back of the head colour, they could be twi ns |
22:08 |
Northernlad |
I love Ravens as there really clever. The best in the corvid group. They would take a chick but not a near adult Osprey |
22:09 |
linda Reimers |
This nest is so crowded when all are in it. They are so big |
22:09 |
aeb4kats |
@ B2711 I agree! they look so much alike, including head shape |
22:10 |
Tiger Mozone |
One thought. I wonder what the first young osprey to come back after 1954. That question has never come up until now |
22:10 |
aeb4kats |
@ Northernlad me too, fascinating birds |
22:11 |
linda Reimers |
wing span is probably 6-7 feet for 1 bird |
22:11 |
linda Reimers |
cool I just saw the span |
22:13 |
Tiger Mozone |
Ok I must be away. |
22:15 |
B2711 |
@Northernlad I think that was CJ7'S scary voice. Dorcha does it too when an intruder is around |
22:15 |
linda Reimers |
What a group pic,keeping eachother comfortable/cozy |
22:16 |
AT |
Are all 4 on the nest now and CJ7 on the perch ? |
22:16 |
linda Reimers |
I believe so AT |
22:17 |

Thank you Linda . Iβve only just checked in all day . Has everything been ok? |

22:35 |

Just what I was thinking @Luck Box , they seem to be huddled together, well 3 of them |
23:23 |
Cath Delsignore |
so just managed to catch up. So who are on the nest now 23:22 and who is on the branch? |
23:24 |
Cath Delsignore |
4 bobs in nest and mum on branch? |
Tue 15-Jul-2025 |
01:29 |
Christopher Dean |
@Cath Delsignore That is correct |
01:31 |

PandaFanSuzanne |
So is 5R5 now flying ? It looked like it today to me..... |
04:32 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
I am still thinking it would be easier if more information was listed under Key dates so far this year 2025 (like dates the chicks are banded or when they fledge) π - thanks |
04:46 |
B2711 |
Hi @PandaFanSuzanne have you looked at Birds of Poole Harbour website? Click the bars, top right of page select Ospreys and scroll down the page to Osprey Diary 2025 and you'll find all you need |
04:48 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
yes - I did look there - thanks |
04:49 |
aeb4kats |
4:44 5R4 found the leftover fish π |
04:49 |
B2711 |
5R5 fledged Saturday evening. 5R3 and 5R4 fledged Sunday morning and baby 5R6 may fledge by the weekend |
04:49 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
it didn't mention if 5R5 or any of the chicks had flown - just said 5R5 was helicoptering |
04:50 |
aeb4kats |
They've all fledged now except 5R6 π |
04:51 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
Thank you @B2711 I didn't see that information (fledge dates) on the website and it just has hatch dates under the stream |
04:51 |
aeb4kats |
He's the youngest and will probably be ready in two or three days |
04:53 |
aeb4kats |
5R5 takes off at 4:51 |
04:53 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
Can they list the fledge dates on this page under the stream with the hatch dates? |
04:55 |
B2711 |
@PandaFanSuzanne if you scroll down the main page there are daily Sightings info. too. As bird types are in bold letters it's easy to find any osprey info. It's good to put the website on Home Screen |
04:55 |
aeb4kats |
5R5 is on the cam pole, visible on aerial view |
04:57 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
@B2711 OK - I find the information a bit harder to find on the website - I just thought maybe the fledge dates could be listed with the other key dates for 2025 - then other information could be |
04:57 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
looked for on the website - just an idea |
04:59 |
B2711 |
They lost the lady who used to put the info on here earlier in the year and they are a very small charity so at the moment it's difficult to keep updating it. |
04:59 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
OK - thanks |
05:07 |
B2711 |
You can also get info on the videos on here @PandaFanSuzanne |
05:11 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
they have such cute faces π |

Lynette Fergusson |
Good morning everyone. TS 5:11 One chick winger sizing from the right side of the nest to the left side of the nest. Then back to the right hand side. |
05:16 |
B2711 |
5R4 is still trying to master self-feeding. Bless |
05:17 |
aeb4kats |
Yes he and 5R6 still need some practice with that |
05:17 |
aeb4kats |
5R4 is pulling on the tail at the moment π
|
05:19 |
aeb4kats |
Good morning Lynette, exciting times, the chicks are having fun |
05:19 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
It gets light early there - sunrise where I am is at 5:54am |
05:20 |
aeb4kats |
Yes, very early, starts around 4:30 am |
05:21 |
B2711 |
@PandaFanSuzanne just remembered BoPH also post on Blue Sky Social |
05:21 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
I don't do Blue Sky but thanks π |
05:21 |
aeb4kats |
And stays light very late, until around 10 |
05:22 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
wow - sunset here is at 8:32pm |
05:23 |
aeb4kats |
Where I am too |
05:24 |
aeb4kats |
It stays light even later at the Scottish nests, only 4 or 5 hours of actual darkness. The farther north, the more hours of daylight |
05:26 |
aeb4kats |
5:24 5R6 politely takes the fish tail |
05:26 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
makes sense - like it is light later in Alaska |
05:27 |
PandaFanSuzanne |
so far (this and last year) the Osprey young all seem very polite |
05:27 |
B2711 |
That fish tail is certainly doing the rounds. |
05:27 |
aeb4kats |
5:25 545 comes down from cam pole and grabs the tail |
05:28 |

5:25-what a beautiful view to wake up to Though I must say,, I now really struggle to work out who is who! Thank you to all who post here. I scroll back to find out! |

I wonder whats going through 5R6's mind atm seeing them all fly away |
05:51 |

B2711 |
06.14 CJ7 brings a tree trunk to pin 5R6 down ready for the gales. |
06:18 |
Northernlad |
lol |
06:21 |
B2711 |
Will the fish go deeper when the wind gets up @Northernlad? |
06:22 |
Northernlad |
not really @B2711 Low tide is the best time for them to fish. Winds make the surface more secure for the fish. rain can make them go deeper because of the noise |
06:25 |
B2711 |
Thanks that's interesting. The tide is falling now so I hope CJ7 has gone fishing. |
06:40 |
Northernlad |
that said a heavy ripple in strong winds can hinder Ospreys fishing as they relay on sight to see the fish. |
06:41 |
Hawk Willow |
Morning all, so calm out there, amazing to think there'll be +40mph winds later |
06:43 |
B2711 |
I think I'll just keep getting mine delivered from Tesco's |

Morning Carey! It was very windy at the platform yesterday & the nest was swaying well at times. |
06:58 |
Sarah G |
Morning all - strange to find only one in the nest. That happened so quickly! |
06:59 |
Northernlad |
@Sarah G 12/07/25 19.38.15 5R5 fledged,13/07/25 08.27.19 5R3 branched, and fledged at 10.29.33,13/07/25 10.20.20 5R4 fledged |
07:00 |
Sarah G |
Thanks @Northernlad I have been following every day but still seems strange to find only one in the nest. |
07:00 |
Northernlad |
3 fledged in 24 hours @Sarah G |
07:01 |
Northernlad |
it will be strange when there are no Ospreys and theres grass growing in the nest @Sarah G |
07:02 |
Sarah G |
Is that the first time for this nest? I can't remember . I thought they were more spaced out previous years |
07:02 |
Northernlad |
Same nest as last year @Sarah G |
07:03 |
Sarah G |
Sorry - I didn't mean that - I meant did they all fledge this quickly last year |
07:06 |
B2711 |
If you look at ...more @Sarah G last years stats are there |
07:09 |
B2711 |
5R6 is doing a lot of preening. Wonder if s/he is thinking of going for a maiden flight today |
07:14 |

Morning! And @Sarah G I think they did fledge closely together last year although I didnβt remember it like that |

Morning @pricey This is my 4th year with this nest and I don't remember it being that quick before... but that could just be my brain! :D |
07:17 |
Sarah G |
Walk over Purbecks was lovely yesterday. Drove past Carey's twice but no sign. Did see a Swallow nest and some Fallow deer so that almost made up for it :) |
07:19 |

I think yesterday it was windy and they spent time hunkering down. @Tiger Mozone put the dates of last years fledge and I was surprised how close together they were |

5R3 became a hovercraft, the wind was just right and lifted her up vertically over the nest. only flapped her wings to get down. this happened around 3 or 4 times. |

Good morning nest watchers. I see XCweather is forecasting 30mph wind gusts today for Poole, which is (in rather quaint understatement) 'strong breeze' on the Beaufort scale |
08:34 |
Holmes |
Morning all the juveniles do look like they enjoy the wind, Iβm not sure BoPH watchers feel the same |
08:39 |
Diana Payne |
@Holmes They are now having to cope with weather extremes without CJ7 sheltering them |
08:40 |

5R6 will not fledge until Thursday morning ( a prediction!) |

Yes around harbour environs |
09:17 |
Northernlad |
there are going to be multiple nests in the Poole harbour area so plenty of opportunities for a good population of Ospreys @Holmes |
09:25 |
Hawk Willow |
@Holmes interesting to think how the dynamics could change as more nests become occupied as we hope, any males on those nests are going to be very unhappy with 022 approaching nearby |
09:28 |
Diana Payne |
@Hawk Willow Yes. No big happy family reunions for Ospreys. They need to disperse for genetic diversity. |
09:32 |

is @birdsofpooleharbour planning of any more live feeds on other nests next season do we know? |

10:25 |

You thinking small girl? |
10:26 |
Tiger Mozone |
I think it is possible. 5R6 was ringed very young and in my view it was too early to be definitive about sex |
10:28 |
Hawk Willow |
I think that's a fair point Tiger makes, I will say though I'm not seeing any of the signs of a female I saw in 5H5 and 5R3, everything points to 5R6 as being male to me. |
10:36 |
Holmes |
Just creep forward a bit more baby we want to compare you to your siblings π |
10:36 |
Diana Payne |
@Hawk Willow What did you spot in the others that signifies femaleness? |
10:39 |
Diana Payne |
If you look at those three in a line, 5R6 is a similar colour to 5R3 - or is that just the light? |
10:40 |
Neil King |
5R6 definitely practicing eating on his own |
10:41 |
Hawk Willow |
@Diana Payne Body size, body shape, beak shape, wingspan, necklace (dark feathers on the chest). I also noticed 5R3 had a bit of a ruff from quite an early age I thought might have been significant. |
10:41 |
Tiger Mozone |
@Diana Payne 5R3 is much bigger than 5R4 and 5R5 |

Males tend to have much longer thighs |

Why no further news on the returned male from the 2023 nest since his arrival. Surely there must have been further sightings of him, no? |

15:30 |

15:26 5R4 let go of the fish and 5R6 happily picked it up. Nice to see some mantling from 5R6 this am even though he lost the first fish |
15:53 |
B2711 |
5R6 getting proficient now at self feeding. He's being quite quick before someone tries to steal the fish |
15:56 |
B2711 |
Also the wind seems to be gradually easing down |
16:08 |
aeb4kats |
@ B2711, yes, lovely to see his progress. Maybe tomorrow with less wind he can really practice his flying skills |
16:08 |
Northernlad |
5R6 getting better at feeding himself...hes got the foot work right |
16:10 |

022 came in with a fish just now then flew off to de head it i think |
16:52 |

He's done well today so far considering he's had to battle with the wind which is probably stronger over water |

@Northernlad thanks for that, blimey about as close to a landing as you can get without touching down |

21:31 |
Debra Jones |
Thanks @Hawk Willow I have been out all afternoon. Were they all brought in by 022? |
21:32 |
B2711 |
@Luck Box. End August/early Sept. the chicks will migrate. Usually to West Africa - Gambia or Senegal, but sometimes only as far as Spain or Portugal. If they survive they return at 2yrs old. |
21:32 |
Hawk Willow |
@Debra Jones yes all by 022 today, some very strong winds in the afternoon |
21:33 |

5R5 spent his first night after fledging away but he's been back since, perhaps a tawny owl annoyed him that night π |
21:44 |
Tiger Mozone |
@Luck Box Juveniles vary quite a bit in their behaviour. Some stick close to the nest until they are ready to migrate |
21:44 |
Tiger Mozone |
Others can wander quite a distance up to 30 miles |
21:46 |

@b2711 Thanks. I was wondering more about the time between fledging and migration, these 4 seem to be sticking pretty close. |
22:09 |
B2711 |
22.06 Aah. 5R6 trying to wingercise and scratch his head at the same time. |
22:10 |
Tiger Mozone |
@Luck Box Normally juveniles migrate about 36 days after first fledge |
22:10 |
Tiger Mozone |
Sometimes it is less and it can be much more |
22:11 |
Luck Box |
@Tiger Mozone Yes, I've seem some sleep off nest almost immediately. I wondered if the 4 last year were similar in staying close by |
22:11 |
Top Cat |
how often do ospreys make a family? |
22:12 |
Tiger Mozone |
Once a year when they get started |
22:12 |
Luck Box |
I see 2 chicks are now standing on the rail, which is a safer sleeping posture than lying face down like 5R6 is still doing |
22:12 |

is it once a year like eagles? |
22:13 |
Debra Jones |
It is @Top Cat |
22:13 |
Top Cat |

But there are lots of complications |
22:13 |
Top Cat |
thx |
22:15 |
Tiger Mozone |
For example at Glaslyn this year, the normal male was late so the wife had paired up with a four year old osprey |
22:15 |
B2711 |
Sorry I misunderstood @Luck Box. Last year they found roosts in dead trees close by so they could see when Dad was bringing a fish to the nest. They were also spotted flying around the harbour. |
22:15 |
Tiger Mozone |
When normal male turned up there was much fighting and all the eggs got broken |
22:16 |
Tiger Mozone |
In the end the young osprey won |
22:16 |

but it was too late for more eggs |

07:06 |

@Ruth Payne Ah that's a good first step, don't think I've ever seen a chick fledge without helicoptering off the top of the screen first so I'd be a bit worried if we don't see that before he goes! |
07:06 |
Debra Jones |
Agree there @Hawk Willow |
07:09 |

Quick scoll back, can see CJ7 hop up to the cam pole at 05:39, 022 on the nest with 5R6 06:09 - 06:11 |
07:25 |
Sylvia Undata |
Thats just an Osprey looking carefully at something specific it could be a Sika Deer or a fox it is down or a bird if its up |
07:25 |

Its like an Owl head movement |

I hope 5R6 leaves it til tomorrow when I am at Careys! I would love to see a fledge in the feather ! ( I am out today meeting up wit a cousin I havent seen in 30 odd years!) |
07:29 |
Sylvia Undata |
I was about to chat about distance judging & our helpful chatters beat me to it! Do ask away we are all learning here! |
07:33 |
Hawk Willow |
5R3 spent the night perched on the edge of the nest rather than lying down, 5R5 pretty much the same though he did lie down for a short time. |
07:34 |
Theresa Michels |
Iβll ask a couple more, then! Iβm familiar with eagle behavior after fledging, but am wondering what happens to these youngsters. Do the parents keep bringing food to the nest for a bit? |
07:34 |
Theresa Michels |
Do the parents teach them to fish? Do they remain in the area they were hatched? |
07:35 |
Debra Jones |
The parents will continue to feed the juveniles until they fledge. Dad is the last to leave on migration. The chicks don't fish for themselves until after they migrate |
07:35 |
Debra Jones |
until they migrate I meant! |

Do the feedings always take place in the nest, or will the parents bring fish to other locations? |
07:37 |
Debra Jones |
Mostly on the nest |

After they migrate, do they typically return to the region they hatched in? |
07:39 |
Debra Jones |
They will return as two years old, the males will return to the area where they hatched, females will explore areas where there are other ospreys |

Morning @Diana Payne Is there an event in the garden, or just to enjoy it? |
07:51 |
Diana Payne |
@Debra Jones @happyskierUK I booked a while ago to go (again) with a friend as it was so lovely last year. I had to cancel my Osprey walk because of a bad back - so annoyng! But I shall be looking up |

@Diana Payne When I visited last week with a friend we went through Corfe to Swanage - it was so clean and tidy there, a nice old-fashioned seaside town. |
07:55 |
Diana Payne |
@happyskierUK Yes - still lovely! I grew up there |
