06:12 |
Christopher Dean |
All awaiting Breakfast from Dad he did well was it 12 or 13 he delivered Yesterday, still not too far for him to get Fish. |
06:13 |
Christopher Dean |
Now we Know why Maya and the Egyptian Geese love this Nest. |
06:14 |
tree |
Christopher, if you said FFMM, you won. that is the right order. 3R6 is #3 ROP confirmed |
06:15 |
tree |
He delivered 13 yesterday |
06:19 |
Christopher Dean |
@tree Yes thanks I said FFFM so got one of them wrong close though. |
06:20 |
tree |
got it my eyes wrong sorry |
06:20 |
Christopher Dean |
Maya does like the Boys to follow the Ladies hence last two Males. |
06:22 |
tree |
I have a thought that #3 can be female if #3 is known only 35 days old at the banding day, and they didn't have any breakfast.. |
06:23 |
Christopher Dean |
@tree I did however see a Lady post that cant remember her name but she said FFMM asking the Day before Ringing it was. |
06:25 |
Christopher Dean |
Who cares as long as they are fine along with Maya & 33, another Great day for Ospreys yesterday. |
06:26 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Good morning everyone |
06:26 |
Christopher Dean |
Poole now has two sites with chicks thanks to Rutland. |
06:27 |
Christopher Dean |
And Maya of course for the Mother of the new ones 1H1 along with 374. |
06:30 |
tree |
yup |
06:32 |
tree |
That Dyfi's Maya's daughter, acts exactly as Maya when she was incubating or tending the chicks. I assume 1H1 must act exactly as Maya too |
06:34 |
Christopher Dean |
374 the Father was a translocated Male from Rutland, he is the only one of 9 Translocated that returned and stayed around Poole area for a good few years or so think it was 2020 it took place. |
06:36 |
Christopher Dean |
Not sure how 1H1 Tends her chicks but I have seen her and she is a Stunning Osprey just like her Mum. |
06:39 |
tree |
374 was translocated to where? Poole must be not so far from Rutland, still needs to translocate? |
06:39 |
Christopher Dean |
Boph only informed us Yesterday so Cameras as of yet we live in hope 1H1 had 3 Eggs but as per normal young pairs only two Hatched. |
06:40 |
Bart |
Hi everyone |
06:40 |
tree |
hi bart |
06:41 |
Bart |
Especially males are bound to their birth site tree. To get them elsewhere the need to grow up in that area, thus translocate |
06:42 |
Bart |
I saw CJ7 bring mud pads to the nest yesterday.. just like her mum |
06:44 |
Christopher Dean |
@Bart CJ7`s Mum Being 00/09 Father being 06/09 |
06:45 |
tree |
Isn't she a grand daughter of Maya? |
06:45 |
Christopher Dean |
@tree No |
06:46 |
Bart |
Sorry.. messed it up |
06:48 |
Christopher Dean |
Am I correct in that 00/09 & 06/09 are at a Lyndon Nest and still on the nest. |
06:51 |
Christopher Dean |
Nice to see all the Family on the nest, but Dad no Fish ???? |
06:51 |
tree |
3R8 already ate this morning |
06:53 |
Bart |
I need rose to keep track of all the Rutland offspring 😂 |
06:53 |
Christopher Dean |
Was that part of a Fish Tail shared by Mum ? |
06:54 |
Christopher Dean |
@Bart That would be one BIG BIG list by now. |
06:54 |
tree |
Blue 09 are you talking about Christopher? it says it is not breeding |
06:55 |
Bart |
It would be interesting to have a chart like that, if only from maya’s offspring |
06:57 |
Christopher Dean |
@Bart Yes she must be Camera wise the First Lady now Mrs G has passed on. |
06:59 |
Christopher Dean |
And still going along fine as we can all see with another 4 to add to the Cause , then CJ7 is being a Rutland Lady following along nicely |
07:02 |
tree |
the parent of CJ7 is 00 & 06 but their nest says K & O as per the record |
07:03 |
Christopher Dean |
So nice to see Ospreys doing so well in England and all venturing out to look for new nesting sites, Norfolk was a nice surprise two chicks announced Yesterday also. |
07:07 |
tree |
Blue 00 didn't make it this year though.. |
07:11 |
Christopher Dean |
@trre thanks for that I will not Let CJ7 know Mum did not return< how about 06 anything on Dad ? |
07:12 |
tree |
63 of 74 countdown list make it this year. more than 85% |
07:13 |
Christopher Dean |
That is a very good return Rate. |
07:16 |
tree |
06 came back on April 13, hope she found a new mate, about the same age as maya I think |
07:16 |
tree |
07:16 Fish delivery |
07:17 |
Bart |
Fish 7:16 |
07:18 |
tree |
I think she got tench again |
07:18 |
Christopher Dean |
I Not Positive but think 06 is The Male |
07:19 |
Christopher Dean |
Lucky them was it last year Gold Fish . |
07:19 |
Bart |
And who’s first at the breakfish table… |
07:20 |
tree |
3R8 |
07:21 |
tree |
Yes Blue 06 is male, I was wrong. about same age as 33 then |
07:21 |
Christopher Dean |
Thats why the Youngest survive. |
07:21 |
Bart |
You gotta be smart and fast |
07:22 |
tree |
3R8 is sooo cute, so as the pool's #4 |
07:23 |
Christopher Dean |
@Bart It seems to happen on all the Nests thats why our 4th chicks Make it to Fledge just of late |
07:26 |
Christopher Dean |
And if Numbers 1-2-3 are well fed that means no in Fighting so 4 stands a better chance, location of Nest and good Fish supply along with Great parents also. |
07:27 |
Christopher Dean |
Bye for Now have a great Day all up in Rutland where my Daughter Lives also. |
07:28 |
tree |
this is a question to bart, but my observation is that Mum definitely need experience as long as plenty of food to fledge 4 chicks successfully |
07:28 |
tree |
syl christopher |
07:29 |
Christopher Dean |
Yes I helped build that Big Pond Back in the Early 70`s for Maya and 33 to Enjoy. |
07:29 |
tree |
oh are you a part of that? wow wonderful |
07:30 |
tree |
I watched a video |
07:32 |
Christopher Dean |
@tree Yes I was on the Tunnel Part to help fill it about 9 miles long 8 foot six in diameter, pumps a lot of water. |
07:34 |
tree |
what a great job, Christopher and all, thanks for all the hardwork! |
07:34 |
Christopher Dean |

07:35 |
tree |
You made a great legacy! |
07:36 |
Christopher Dean |
@tree it was good Pay in them Days, so a Pleasure, since served in the Army for 23 years and that was a long time ago also. |
07:37 |
Rose R |
Morning all. @Bart reading back earlier this year inspired by 2AM (17) nesting fairly close to me in the Midlands I did start to track some of Maya's many chicks. I will continue in the autumn |
07:37 |
tree |
Glad to here you got good pay, it must have been a hardwork |
07:40 |
Christopher Dean |
@tree &@Bart It is so nice to Follow Ospreys and see them so Happy and knowing they are Thriving, at the time I would never have dreamt of this. |
07:40 |
tree |
07:16 33 delivers a floppy tench for breakfast. 3R8 pecking the fish still on 33's talon. 07:17 Maya gets it 33 leaves. |
07:42 |
Christopher Dean |
I tree yes hard work long shifts but I had Muscles in places you could only Dream of LOL |
07:42 |
Christopher Dean |
Take care all. |
07:43 |
tree |
Lol Christopher syl |
07:53 |
tree |
07:18 Feed 2. 3R8 gets the 1st bite. continue eating alone until 07:22 and turns around. 07:23 3R7 goes to maya, getting fed. 07:24 3R6 goes to Maya, getting a few bites, steps out.07:25 3R7 eating. |
07:55 |
tree |
07:28 3R7 turns around, 3R5 comes and getting fed. 07:34 3R5 turns around. Maya asks, 'who is next?" 3R6 somehow hesitant. 07:35 3R6 comes to Maya, getting fed. 07:39 3R7 ps, waiting at the table |
07:56 |
Sue Scott |
Are my eyes deceiving me or is the water level going down? Will that effect them fishing? |
07:59 |
tree |
07:45 3R6 turns around. Maya eating herself. 07:47 3R7 crawls forward to table. getting fed.07:48 3R7 gets the tench the skin & tail pack. That's what she wanted.07:49 Maya feaking. |
08:06 |
tree |
07:55 Maya picks up the tench skin, but decides to leave it as is. 07:59 Maya works on sheet soil. 08:00 3R7 topples over something (may be jumped) 3R8 ps in the back. |
08:09 |
tree |
07:51 3R7 using talon, tearing a piece, & eat. 07:53 3R5/Maya scrum by the wall. 07:54 3R7 confused tough tench skin & stick, she pecking stick instead of tench skin. Maya sees it Feed Ends |
08:15 |
Rose R |
Morning all. The water level on the left hand side has dropped quite a bit. On visiting Rutland Water recently I was surprised at how full the reservoir was in general so there shouldn't be a problem |
08:16 |
Rose R |
They also pump oxygen into the reservoir to benefit both the fish and water quality |
08:27 |
tree |
08:05 Maya goes back to the tench skin. Eats for a few min. 08:07 leaves the skin, moves some soft stick.08:19 33 lands on nest "is there leftover?" "Oh yes, the skin!" 08:20 33 leaves with the skin |

ROP have confirmed now that it is Rutland male 359 (21) who has been on the Lagoon 4 nest. He has been joined in the last week by female 3H9 (23) who had been sighted this year in Devon and Poole |
10:35 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Thank you for the info rose 🤗 |
10:36 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Mum having a well deserved brunch |
10:36 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Morning all and thanks for TS etc. |
10:38 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Good to see that the chicks have been ringed (I was wrong about #1 and #4). |
10:38 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Good morning Lockhart |
10:39 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Hi Karen. |
10:39 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
It’s lovely isn’t it I nearly got it right just #4 I got wrong |
10:40 |
Rose R |
Good morning Karen. Morning Lockhart did you enjoy your visit to Manton Bay? |
10:40 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Morning rose |
10:41 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Good to see two of each, as there tends to be a shortage of females. |
10:41 |
Rose R |
I got #1 wrong. She is a very gentle female unlike her sister! |
10:41 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
I loved it. Spent about an hour in that particular hide. When i arrived, 33 was on the nest, and Maya was perched 15m or so away. |
10:42 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Awhh bet it was amazing to see them |
10:42 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
After a while he decided to go fishing (and Maya moved to the nest). I have a few flight photos of 33, but not checked through them yet |
10:42 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
(got home late last night) |
10:43 |
Rose R |
I was hoping for a couple of females too as there does seem quite a few spare males around |
10:43 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
It was lovely weather for it Lockhart |
10:43 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Didn't see him catch a fish, but it was fiscinating watching him check a series of different locations. |
10:43 |
Bart |
Hi Lockhart. Nice you saw them up close |
10:43 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Too warm for me, to be honest (whole week was like that).. |
10:43 |
Rose R |
33 put on a good display for you then. Hopefully you've got some good photos |
10:44 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Are you going next week Bart |
10:44 |
Bart |
The week after Karen |
10:44 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Ooooooo not be long then |
10:44 |
Rose R |
It has been too hot this week. Fortunately it looks cooler from tomorrow |
10:45 |
Rose R |
You'll have to visit Lagoon 4 now too Bart |
10:45 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Looked like iy was too warm for the kids, too, but could see two of them peering over the sides of the nest, watching the world go by (and that hide has a screen showing this feed). |
10:46 |
Alden |
I hope that is in the right format Bart |
10:47 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Awhhh bet that was lovely to see |
10:47 |
Bart |
You can now leave your fledge order guesses in chat btw. Just the ring numbers, no dates and the word fledge in it please |
10:48 |
Rose R |
The heat must be a worry at some of the nests with very young chicks. It's usually the cold and damp that is a problem |
10:48 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
That's tricky; males sometimes fledge younger . . . |
10:48 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
So they don’t fledge in order they were hatched Bart |
10:49 |
Bart |
Not necessarily Karen , look at obs to see the past fledges |
10:51 |
Rose R |
So you went for all four in the correct order then Bart just to give us something to think about! 😄 |
10:51 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Oh thank you Bart |
10:51 |
Bart |
As Lockhart said, 3H6 or 8 might be quicker, and 6 before 5 .. or in order of age |
10:52 |
Bart |
Yes rose.. won’t be easy |
10:52 |
Rose R |
As Lockhart says males sometimes fledge earlier as they are lighter. |
10:52 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Have to confess, I'm not bothered, so long as all of them fledge successfully. |
10:53 |
Bart |
Looking up lagoon 4, if I can find it, will definitely pay a visit |
10:53 |
Rose R |
Probably got as much chance as guessing the correct gender 😂 |
10:53 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
But I hope you get to see a fledge during your vist @Bart |
10:53 |
Bart |
Indeed 😂 |
10:53 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Same here Rose 😂 |
10:54 |
Bart |
Me too Lockhart… I predict at least one or two to fledge then… but will probably miss it, unless I put my tent up on the shore |
10:55 |
Rose R |
Lagoon 4 is right by the Egleton Birdwatching Centre although that is difficult to find down all the lanes |
10:56 |
Bart |
Thanks |
10:56 |
Bart |
How was the distance photo wise Lockhart ? |
10:57 |
Rose R |
I think it's probably a case of guessing Karen as with so many chicks on the nest someone could fledge without meaning too |
10:57 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Yes |
10:57 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
This is a hard one |
10:59 |
Bart |
I’ll give you the rest of the month.. or until the day before one fledges |
11:00 |
Rose R |
How will we know the day before one fledges? 🤣 |
11:00 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Fledge 3R5 3R7 3R6 3R8 |
11:01 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Pure guess 🫣 |
11:02 |
Bart |
Part of the game rose… wait until you are pretty certain and you might be too late 😂 |
11:02 |
Rose R |
Maybe right though Karen if they go in order. |
11:03 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
@Bart Nest was too distant for me, but 33 approached to something like 70 metres while fishing. |
11:03 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
I’m so rubbish at guessing |
11:04 |
Rose R |
Probably best to guess early then. Good job we don't have to guess the correct date too |
11:06 |
Bart |
Perfect Alden |
11:07 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Pleased to see that the weathe rwarnings for thunderstorms this evening don't seem to apply to Rutland. |
11:07 |

There were some really bad thunderstorms on the east coast about a week ago but fortunately Rutland missed them too |
11:09 |
Bart |
11:06 fish |
11:13 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
I'm glad they have leg rings now. If it wasn't for that, I'd struggle to tell them apart after a week away. |
11:13 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
As it is, 3R5 politely asking dad for a taste of fish is very cute. |
11:16 |
Patricia Standingford |
Fledge = 3R5 3R7 3R8 3R6 |

When can the Chicks Feed them self |
11:44 |
JOHN MATTHEWS |
When will the chicks Fledge |
11:48 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
33 away, 11:42:58. |
11:49 |
Bart |
They are trying to selffeed, but will take some time to fully self feed. Fledging early (first week) July I think |
12:00 |
mymainman |
Looks like they are benefiting from a breeze..Hope its a cool breeze.. |
12:10 |
Rose R |
With regard to 359 who has been spotted at Rutland Lagoon 4 he is another of Maya's grandchicks. His father is 8F who was hatched here in 2012. Maya's partner at that time was Green 5R |
12:11 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Interesting; thanks @Rose R . Do you know where 8F is based? |
12:15 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
We are expecting thunderstorms in Nottingham today |
12:15 |
Rose R |
8F is shown at Rutland site O so a nest on private land in the wider Rutland area |
12:17 |
Rose R |
I saw there is the possibility of thunderstorms today Karen. We could do with some rain but not too much |
12:18 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Yes my son’s a keen gardener grows a lot of fruit and vegetables so he’s praying for rain 🙏🏻 |
12:20 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Look at proud mum and dad 😍 |
12:21 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Wonder if Leanne still there |
12:22 |
Rose R |
I must admit I was worried when all four eggs hatched but both Maya and 33 have been brilliant this year. I bet they'll enjoy a rest though after the chicks have all left |
12:24 |
Rose R |
Maya is unusual in that she quite often stays for a few days after the chicks have all migrated. |
12:24 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Same here Rose amazing parents |
12:24 |
Karen W (Kalbella) |
Oh does she bless her |

OOo. No I hadn't seen that. TY |

I'll watch out for her, probably going tomorrow. Today was a bit too warm for me |

It's only 25c here now we've just had a shower. It should be a much better temperature to investigate tomorrow Ioana |

where is lagoon 4 |
14:05 |
Rose R |
I would think your garden will be very dry Elizabeth. At least you get a good idea of the weather at home by watching the nest |
14:06 |
Elizabeth G |
indeed Rose😄 |
14:06 |
Rose R |
Lagoon 4 is by the Egleton Bird Watching Centre so there is public access nearby |
14:08 |
Ioana Logafatu |
The best hide to see 359 is the Dunlin hide (Egleton Reserve) Its closest to the nesting pole and perch - Right in front of the hide |
14:09 |
Ioana Logafatu |
If you want to see Maya's nest from Egleton, its visible from the Wigeon hide, but you need good optics! |
14:11 |
Rose R |
It's quite a while since you first spotted 359 there Ioana so it's good that he's stayed around until now |
14:15 |

I am wondering if "littlest chick" 3R8 gets his share of the fish? |
15:14 |

@Gordon Morrison no fledge that was Maya leaving with the left overs. |
15:14 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
A minor glitch in the feed at 15:02; when it resumed at 15:03, 33 was on the nest with a fish. |
15:15 |

@Ann S definitely so! |

15:21 |

The average age for fledging on this nest is 53 days but could be anywhere between 50-56 days old. The eldest is currently 43 days and youngest 35 so it's likely another week yet |
15:22 |
Elizabeth G |
definitely need an extension to this nest😄 |

3R6 grabbed the tail at 15:17. |
15:24 |

"How does Mum swallow these?!" |
15:28 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
Finally gets it down at 15:24. |
15:29 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
@Rose R Does that count as 3R6 being first at something? ;) |
15:35 |
Rose R |
3R8 has eaten a couple of tough fish tails. He did have a bit of trouble though and kept asking for help off mum! |
15:36 |
Rose R |
3R8 has been brought up on a diet of leftovers though! |
15:38 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
That resourcefulness could help both 3R6 and 3R8. |
15:40 |
Rose R |
Yes they need to be with two older sisters |
15:41 |
Patricia Standingford |
I've been very impressed by 3R8's intelligence. He's worked out ways of overcoming his disadvantage of age and size. I admire him tremendously! |
15:44 |
Rose R |
I agree 3R8 is very clever. He realised he needed to wait to be fed and he always watched everything else going on. |
15:56 |
Patricia Standingford |
And I noticed how he learnt early on to try and be next to the protective sister rather than the one who Bonked him! |
15:58 |
Rose R |
Yes he did Patricia! I was surprised that #1 was also a female as she was quite loving to her little brother |
15:59 |
Patricia Standingford |
If she were a human child she would be the kind of little girl who plays with dolls! |
16:00 |
Rose R |
I think she would 😂 |
16:01 |
Rose R |
It will be interesting to see who fledges and then migrates first |
16:04 |
Patricia Standingford |
I put 3R8 before his brother on the basis of his "look and learn" ethic! Did yu see how he followed 3R6's long strugglee with thhe fish-tail? He was trying to learn which moves would succeed! |
16:09 |
Rose R |
3R8 does watch absolutely everything. He also ensures by being very vocal that no one forgets about him. When his sisters were trying self feeding he asked them to feed him too! |
16:11 |
Patricia Standingford |
I've been wondering about the migration flight - do Ospreys go as a group, or singly? I'm inItaly and have only seen two Ospreys in the flesh. They were both alone and it was during term-time so |
16:12 |
Patricia Standingford |
they must have been migrating. I saw them on the way to the school where I worked! |
16:13 |
Rose R |
They do go on their own. It is amazing to think that in a couple of months they need to be able to fish and find their way to Africa |
16:15 |
Rose R |
At a lot of nests the female goes first followed by the chicks. The male remains until all chicks have gone |
16:16 |
Rose R |
Maya quite often stays with 33 for a few days after all the chicks have gone though so it will be interesting to see what she does this year |

A few ospreys do stay in Spain or Portugal during the winter and as Maya arrives so early I sometimes wonder if she is one of them |
16:19 |
Patricia Standingford |
It really is! I'm an OAP and still not old enough to face doing either on my own!!! |
16:22 |
Rose R |
I wouldn't fancy it either! A few of the MB chicks have been photographed in Spain or Portugal but not in Africa so we cannot know where they stay in the winter |
16:22 |
Patricia Standingford |
Maybe the two I've seen were wintering in Italy, then.Mistaking the Alps for the Pyrenees?? |
16:23 |

We do know that Rutland born 5F winters at Tanji Marsh in the Gambia as she is seen on exactly the same post every year |

I did. Spent a good while in a hide near the nest. When I arrived, 33 was on the nest with the kids, and Maya was on a perch maybe 15 metres away. |
17:02 |
Lockhart Horsburgh |
33 started fishing (grabbed a couple of photos when he came relatively close), and Maya moved almost instantly to the nest. |
17:02 |
